Explore New Mombasa in H3: Recon, it's open world
Xbox 360 - Latest News

,

As you may have heard, the latest issue of Game Informer is just chock-full of new info about Halo 3: Recon. CVG has been kind enough to spill some of the beans -- gotta save some beans for the mag, after all -- the biggest of which is the fact that Recon will be an open world game. The story has players taking control of a rookie Orbital Drop Shock Trooper who's looking for his four other squad members in the city of New Mombasa, which you may remember from Halo 2. Using a new PDA, players can set waypoints to find the last known locations of each squad member. Upon arriving, players will discover clues that will trigger a playable flashback in which they take on the role of the missing squad member and find out what happened to him. The flashback levels will play more like a "traditional, linear" Halo level and "unravel the mystery of what went on in New Mombasa."

Of course, ODST are not Spartans, so players will have to make do without superhuman speed, jumping, and coordination (i.e no dual wielding). ODSTs also lose the benefit of a motion tracker. Oh, and no handy regenerating shields either, though health will still regenerate. As you might expect, this will make encounters with enemies like Brutes a little more intimidating, especially considering they will now all be much taller and faster than you.

Finally, one of the squad members will be played by Nathan Fillion. That is sweet.

You got Avatar in my Xbox.com! [update]
Xbox 360 - Latest News

Update: It looks like the online Marketplace is now viewable as well.

Hey kids, remember the Xbox.com maintenance that went on earlier today? Oh, you say you were asleep. Well, it's not a big deal or anything, but we thought we would inform you that your Xbox.com profile page now displays your Avatar (assuming you have the NXE, of course). That's about it, really. As far as we can tell, the Xbox.com Marketplace still isn't open for business, so don't go thinking you can start blowing your Microsoft Points at work just yet. We expect that an any other major changes to Xbox.com will launch tomorrow alongside the NXE.

[Thanks CapnJunkie]

Dead Kennedys, Mission of Burma and more added to Rock Band
Xbox 360 - Latest News

, ,

Freshly squeezed Rock Band downloadable content just made its way onto the XBLM and, this week, it's a bitter-sweet mixture of musical goodness. Make the click towards the break for a complete listing of all of today's new music, which includes track packs from the Dead Kennedys and Mission of Burma as well as three tracks from the "Century Media Girls of Metal" and a value priced song from Crooked X. Jam on my wayward son ... jam on.

Lips commercial dares you to look away
Xbox 360 - Latest News

Okay, so Joystiq posted a commercial for Microsoft's new karaoke title Lips. We've watched it and now we need to pass it on to you. Just like the tape from The Ring, we get the feeling that passing this video on is the only way to stop the curse that we were undoubtedly infected with when we first watched it. Go ahead and watch it and you'll understand. Having done that, we suggest you pass it along as well, lest the bogey-lips haunt your dreams and destroy your soul with song.

Find the video after the break.

The new Xbox.com Marketplace is sorta alive
Xbox 360 - Latest News

,

After spotting Avatars' invasion of the Xbox.com profile pages, we're now seeing more changes happen to Xbox.com, especially the online accessible Xbox Live Marketplace. Currently, the Xbox.com browseable Marketplace is offline, but its skeleton structure is browsable and you can see the general XBLM browsing UI. There are categories on the left, new content will be listed at the bottom, the oh so important download queue and all kinds of account management options including credit card changes. Give the not yet officially launched Xbox.com XBLM a browse and patiently awaits its BIG launch on Wednesday.

Kim: 360's lifespan 1 day longer than PS3
Xbox 360 - Latest News

According to Microsoft head honcho Shane Kim, the Xbox 360 is here to stay for a long, long time and promises Microsoft will not end 360 production as quickly as they did with the original Xbox.

When asked specifically when Microsoft will move from the 360 to another console, Kim claims they'll one-up Sony by making the 360's lifespan last "one day longer than the lifespan of the PlayStation 3". That's big, seeing that Sony is predicting their PS3 will last a 10 year life cycle. You heard it here first, the Xbox 360 will be around for 10 years and 1 day.

PSA: Xbox.com (NOT Xbox Live) down Nov. 18 [update]
Xbox 360 - Latest News

Update: Aaaaaand it's back. Bet you didn't even notice.

Just a quick public service announcement: Major Nelson informs us that Xbox.com as well as the Xbox.com forums will be down for maintenance on November 18 from 12:01am PT until 4:00am PT. The maintenance, as you may have guessed, is being done in preparation for the New Xbox Experience, which launches this Wednesday. Major Nelson stresses (in big, angry red letters, no less) that Xbox Live will not be down during this time, but who's to say, really? After all, aliens could attack, which we're pretty sure would render Xbox Live inoperable. So let's just say Xbox Live isn't scheduled to be down tomorrow.
